Xbox Live Decides “Gay” is Unacceptable, Even If That’s Your Name

Now it’s just getting stupid. Kotaku has the latest on Xbox Live and its “Don’t Ask, Just Ban” policy for gamertags with any inclusion of the three most offensive letters in the alphabet. The latest casualty of the carpet-bannings is the gamertag “RichardGaywood,” the obscene filth concocted by a gamer by the name of Richard Gaywood.

…oh. I guess that’s his name. Well, his parents should have known that some day he’d want to play video games online and named him something more appropriate!

We understand that it would be very time-consuming for Microsoft to hand-check every single gamertag they ban from Live, and harder still to verify which ones are genuinely reasonable, but this has really gotten ridiculous. We’d like to take a moment to remind everyone that Xbox Live Marketplace sells episodes of Family Guy, Robot Chicken, South Park, and plenty of others where the word “gay” is spoken, on average, 19 times per episode. Think of the children.
