According to Blizzard, World of Warcraft is now played by more than 11.5 million subscribers worldwide. (They define subscriber as “individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access.”)
Thanks in no doubt to the new Wrath of the Lich King expansion that sold nearly 3 million copies in its first day, the new subscriptions number is an all-time high for World of Warcraft and the MMORPG genre. Previously, World of Warcraft's subscriber amount peaked in January of 2008, when they hit the 10 million mark.
“We’re pleased to welcome the new and returning players who have helped World of Warcraft reach these new milestones, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and support that the game’s global community has continued to show,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We look forward to providing all of them with an excellent entertainment experience for a long time to come.”
Even though the game came out years ago, I’m still amazed at how successful WoW was—and continues to be. One game basically floating an entire company for years? Pretty impressive. 11.5 active players? Also pretty impressive.
Meanwhile, in other news that no one will be shocked by, it’s snowing in some parts of America, Christmas is this week, and in about an hour those of us on the west coast of the US will most like start eating lunch.
