In a cozy little theatre at CES 2009, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith explained that the multi-billion dollar success of "Guitar Hero" stemmed from one simple truth. "It's tapping into an almost universal dream in a very realistic way," he said. "Is there anyone in this room who has never dreamt of becoming a rock star?"
I'm not sure if I could say the same about, oh, I don't know, belting out showtunes in an Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical... but that won't stop Really Useful Group, Lloyd-Webber's personal media conglomeration, from trying.
According to an article at PaidContent, RUG is currently developing games for console, PC and mobile over the next several years, and the first such titles will indeed be music games based on the plays of Andrew Lloyd-Webber. Players will take on the role of characters in the musical performance, sing, and in an American Idol/Pop Idol twist, perhaps even audition for their roles.
RUG digital director Douglas Glen told PaidContent this came about as a result of gaming's growing audience.
“With the video gaming audience having moved from its male-dominated roots towards a more family-oriented demographic, now is the perfect time for us to take some of the best-known names in musical entertainment in a more interactive direction,” he said.
