Why Am I Still Talking About Fable 2? (tl;dr)

Wed, Nov 12, 2008

Opinion

When Fable 2 was first released, I greeted it with fair to moderate excitement. “Hooray!” I thought, “Something to play until Fallout 3 comes out.” It was perfect for my purposes and did a nice enough job of distracting me for that one week. It was short, pretty to look at (zomg 9000 leaves), had a bit of humor and, ooooh, a doggie! I have since moved on to the next game, and the next game after that, even, but somehow I am still talking about Fable 2. This game has really struck a nerve with me, but not the good kind like you want.

Fable 2 has glitches, and I know that games just have glitches, BUT, OMG, WOW. Some pretty major, game-breaking glitches appear to have “slipped through the net” this time. Though I have, for all intents and purposes, finished the game — the main bad guy’s dead, non-repeating side quests are done, I’m making everyone call me “Queen” — I haven’t actually completed it. One glitch, one little glitch is preventing me from moving on.

[Warning -- Spoilers Ahead]

Here’s what’s happened. After defeating Lucien, your hero is presented with three options as a reward: The Needs of the Many, in which you restore to life all those who died in constructing the tattered spire; The Needs of the Few, in which you restore to life your murdered family and dog; and the Needs of One, in which you line your pockets with sweet, sweet gold. I chose The Needs of the Few, because I really liked my dog. Having chosen this option, my main quest became Retribution with the instructions to return to my family. I immediately figured this would be a problem as I’d already experienced the very popular Zombie Daughter glitch before leaving for the last quest. But, lo and behold, upon returning home my daughter was magically restored! I was so pleased, I actually took a moment to check her status screen and do a little dance for her. But, when I returned to my quest menu, “Return to my Family” was still listed as my active quest. That’s when it dawned on me that my husband, the rat-like goaf whose heart I should have broken were I not going the goody-two-shoes route, had disappeared. He wasn’t in the house, he wasn’t in the pub, he wasn’t in any town or on any route I could travel. Drawing advice from so many others experiencing this glitch, I tried all kinds of things to get him back. I slept with another person in our marital bed. I became engaged to someone else. I lowered his maintenance allowance to zero in the hope he’d at least show up to divorce me. But, no, our relationship status remained at Happy and he even had a gift for me, but he never showed up. The man has simply vanished, I cannot complete the game, I am going to throw a chair through a window.

Anyway, that’s all my complaining for the moment. Yesterday, Lionhead teased a “major announcement” for Fable 2, which I’m assuming will be something about downloadable content. But, I am holding out hope that somewhere in there is a fix, so I can find my husband and just stop thinking about Fable 2. If not, I will absolutely drop a building on someone.

LOVE the graphic… I ell-oh-elled and I don’t really do that. And if I do, I definitely don’t talk about it.

wow… um, the game sounds pretty good WITH the glitch. screw around on your husband, yet he still has a gift for you? sweet.

  5. Marie Says:

@Janice there is an achievement for… um… polyamory.

Sucks about that glitch. Luckily, or maybe not, I was too busy being an adventurer to get married before killing the man, well I didn’t actually kill him but he was killed none the less, who murdered my sister. So I didn’t need to worry about my spouse not being there after. Hopefully Lionhead’s announcement is some sweet DLC though. Bug fixes are for wussies.

I always wish I could bring myself to play as an evil douchenozzle in these types of games, but instead I end up with shining blonde hair and a mile-wide jaw every time.

I know, right? Someone should totally put [Warning -- Spoilers Ahead] or something in there! Talk about rude.

Way to not write [Warning -- Spoilers Ahead], Marie. Next time, write [Warning -- Spoilers Ahead], okay?!

    @Jesse [Warning -- Spoilers Ahead] cry:::cry:::cry:::cry

  15. Marie Kare Says:

@Prae7orian: TONS of people are having this problem and have attempted some REALLY interesting solutions to no avail. A friend told me that he heard that someone contacted QA (how’s that for a solid source?) and they said “Oh, I thought we fixed that.” And that was all…

hi! i played all the way thru didnt notice any quest glitches ! i did however find a money making glitch!! buying and selling weapons making a nice tidy profit! i also noticed my husband decides to leave me when i return to house after a quest (even when i give him gifts and make him happy)

it is a good game as was the first i just love the story but i feel it has been rushed a little and i still have questions about the story i want answering !!!!

  17. Marie Kare Says:

@topbuzz oooh weapons trading, eh? what shops did you use? I made all my money off real estate, like a jerk. That sucks that your husband kept leaving you. did you get a message about him wanting a divorce before he left or did he just take off?

maybe you’ll get some questions answered when this big announcement comes out!
