With an install base of 10 million, it’s almost inevitable that a World of Warcraft movie will be created. In fact, fanboys of the game frequently make silly statements on forums to the effect of, “I would pay $<insert absurd amount of money here> to see a World of Warcraft movie. Imagine how much money Blizzard could make!” Ahh, the wonderful throes of addiction. Here’s the catch, of course. The most infamous video game movie director ever lays waste to video game franchises with reckless abandon. What’s that, Uwe Boll? Blizzard told you to bugger off? There must be a higher power at work here.
Boll was recently interviewed about his movies, and he revealed this little nugget:
“I got in contact with Paul Sams of Blizzard, and he said, ‘We will not sell the movie rights, not to you…especially not to you,’” Boll revealed. “Because it’s such a big online game success, maybe a bad movie would destroy that ongoing income, what the company has with it.”
I love it. So often the exchanges between business people gets boiled down to a very correct, polite form, but not here. Oh, no. Blizzard doesn’t just say no to Uwe Boll. This is no polite “Hey, you’re real nice and all, but I’m just not ready for a relationship right now.” It’s more of a “Back away from me you ugly freak before I pull out my pepper spray and destroy your corneas!”
Who knows if a WoW movie could ever be good, but at least it won’t be that special brand of Uwe Boll horrendous.
