We admit it — not only is Trailer Tuesday one day late this week, but our trailers are also slightly out of date, surfacing here (in the case of Far Cry 2) as many as five days after their original debut. But considering three of those five days consisted of a rockin’ Memorial Day weekend, we hope you’ll forgive us. And who knows? These videos may have slipped under your radar screen as well. Join us for the first glimpses of Dark Void and Far Cry 2, courtesy of GameVideos, and help us continue to separate the cream from the rest of the crop.
To celebrate the tail end of a week’s worth of Dark Void coverage, 1UP revealed the very first gameplay footage. But while we appreciate getting an honest look at the game…
…we wonder if Capcom made the right choice in showing this off to the public, because we’re not seeing anything revolutionary at this point. Where 1UP’s day 1 preview had us envisioning a flight-suit equipped Iron Man of sorts taking down behemoths right out of Shadow of the Colossus before jumping into a full-on Crimson Skies aerial firefight, what we see here is pretty much straight-up Gears of War, right down to the contextual cover indicators and HUD placement. (That popgun also sounds incredibly unsatisfying.) In the full, eight minute interview below, designers Kraig Kujawa and Jose Perez III explain that the game is a good bit deeper:
But it would have been nice if they’d shown some of that depth off in these videos.
Practically a polar opposite, the Far Cry 2 trailer shows little in the way of gameplay, but makes up for this with a brief glimpse into the beautiful, vibrant environments that you will likely take a hand in demolishing. The vaguely compelling narration by a Mr. Eko sound-alike makes us wonder if story will finally mean something in Far Cry. Overall, color us impressed.
