Several sources are independently reporting that the quirky, beloved SNES role-playing game EarthBound has been rated for Wii by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, and is thus liable to appear on Virtual Console sometime in the near future.

Peeking around the corner of the gaming interweb, the general mood towards the announcement is incredulity — no true fan can afford to believe while so much is still up in the air.
Our hearts go out in particular to the fans at Starmen, who after reporting just yesterday that EarthBound had won a Nintendo Power poll for Virtual Console Most Wanted, proceeded to berate Nintendo for failing to notice years of dedicated pleas for the game. They are busy praying that they were wrong.
Joystiq more or less believes the game will arrive, but wonders whether we’ll drop an arm and a leg to get it…
…and Game|Life notes that it may not arrive anytime soon, but offers some WiiWare ESRB ratings as condolence.
Personally, I’ve never played the game; but if it’s anywhere near as incredible as fellow VC gem Sin and Punishment, that will soon change.
Oh, and in case you cared about the actual rating - it got an E. For Everyone.
