According to the Los Angeles Times, Sony is currently in licensing talks with TV and film studios to launch a digital-distribution platform for online video — straight from the internet to your PlayStation 3. Anonymous studio executives say it could arrive “as early as this summer.”
Regular readers of the official PlayStation Blog will no doubt remember Senior Vice President Peter Dille’s outlook on PlayStation Network, in which he wrote the following:
Many of you have been hearing rumblings about a video service that will allow you to download full-length TV shows and movies via PLAYSTATION Network for North America. While I don’t have any new announcements here for the PlayStation Nation, it’s already been confirmed that we’ll be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you’ve seen or used. Ultimately the goal of the PLAYSTATION Network service will be to break through the overwhelming clutter of digital media to give you the TV, movies and gaming content you want. More on this very soon …
Unofficially, at least, “soon” would appear to be now — but aside from anecdotes about two previous failed distribution ventures (Movielink and Sony Connect), the LA Times has nothing more for us to go on.
GameCyte has a hunch where you might see some of the fruits of these labors, though…
