Yesterday, we learned that PopCap Games' next title was going to be -- of all things -- a zombie game. Not your standard, "Let's kill these zombies for being different than us" game like Left 4 Dead, either. Said PR rep Garth Chouteau: "It’ll be a few months, but our next new game will be worth the wait… 'zombie apocalypse,' the PopCap way: no blood, no gore, but blood-curdlingly fun and addictive just the same."
Being a huge zombie and PopCap fan, that just simply wasn't enough. I got in touch with Garth and convinced him to share a little more about the game, at the cost of telling an official PopCap employee that my belief was it was going to be a Bejeweled game where you match 3 like-colored brains instead of gems. (So I'm pretty sure that, despite his insistence that the new match-3-brains genre still belonged to me, PopCap is the legal owner now and we'll see that sometime in Q1 2009.)
According to Garth, there is "Not much more we're [PopCap] able to say at this juncture re: the 'zombie apocalypse' game -- other than you fight the zombies with plants ... flowers, veggies, shrubs and so forth. They're ferocious flora, though, don't worry -- they're a match for any horde of undead."
So there you have it. PopCap's next game will definitely be zombie related, and it will involve fighting zombies off with vegetation.
I think I'm more confused now than I was yesterday...
