Don’t call the movers just yet — your new virtual dwelling isn’t quite ready for the housewarming party. Sony has announced a delay of the new PlayStation Home service, originally announced a year ago at GDC, citing the need for more development time and testing. PlayStation Home will expand its closed beta phase this summer, followed by open beta testing in the fall.
Kaz Hirai, ridge-racing president of SCEI, assured future tenants that “Spending more time on the development and on the Closed Beta testing reaffirms our commitment to bringing a quality service, maintaining the PlayStation tradition.” Home, which is being described as a social gaming service, has been compared to Second Life, where user avatars will be able to visit their friends’ in-game houses, view their gaming achievements in the form of visual trophies, interact socially, and join each other for PS3 games.
A website is currently up, promising users a chance to register soon for the closed beta trial.
