PhoneSaber Loses Leash, Probably Provides Jedi Marketing Mind Trick This September

News

While speaking of their latest iPhone games, a THQ Wireless representative informed us that PhoneSaber, the amusing light and sound lightsaber application formerly available for the iPhone, will be expanded, improved and relaunched later this month as “Phone Saber Unleashed.”

Nearly a month ago, TheMacBox was forced to pull PhoneSaber from the iTunes Apps Store — but not at the behest of Lucasfilm. As it turned out, THQ Wireless owned the rights to Star Wars applications on mobile phones, and wanted the application shut down not for infringement, but rather so that they could produce an official version. But aside from speculation on the part of TheMacBox themselves, who revealed that they would be working with THQ to develop the new app, there was no particular indication when or how we’d see the application return, until now.

Now, we have a general release date, and based upon the application’s new title, reason to believe that TheMacBox was right to intuit that the application will be used as a marketing tool for the upcoming Force Unleashed videogame.

THQ Wireless did not respond to requests for further information by time of publication.

Not exactly standard GameCyte fare, we know, but when news falls into your lap it’s hard not to catch it, fold it into a paper airplane and see if it holds wind.

Update: Moconews reports that the application will be free, and feature music and dialogue in addition to lightsaber colors.

It’s nice to know they are working with the developers of the original app to make an “official,” one, but I still have to wonder - is this a simple case of - “Hey, that’s a good idea. We should charge money for that!”
