When contacted for comment earlier today, Nintendo representatives in all major territories would not lend credence to reports that a new Nintendo DS will arrive in Japan before the end of the year. Mind you, they’re not denying it either…
Nintendo of Japan’s response was characteristically subtle. As translated by Kotaku:
We are always developing new products. However, since nothing has been announced officially, we are unable to comment at this time.
CVG obtained the following statement from Nintendo UK, which sounds oddly familiar:
Nintendo has made no such announcement and will not comment on rumour and speculation.
Perhaps most interesting, however, is the paragraph we ourselves received from Nintendo of America. They claim the Nikkei article had no official source:
The Nikkei newspaper wrote a recent story about a DS solely based upon their own research and speculation, without interviewing Nintendo. While Nintendo is always working on new hardware, we have not made any announcement about a DS and we cannot comment on the Nikkei story.
While Nintendo has denied many hardware refresh rumors in the past, I think it’s telling that that the common thread in each of these is not denial, but rather the fact that there has not been an ‘official announcement.’
Yet.
