So far, my every encounter with beautiful first-person parkour adventure Mirror’s Edge has left me begging for just a little bit more. Just a peek beyond that first red door that ended the E3 demo. Just a glimpse at what lies at the bottom of the iridescent industrial waterfall above. Just a few seconds more of the game’s catchy theme song.
Apparently, this is a feeling DICE hopes to inspire throughout Mirror’s Edge, up to and including in the game’s conclusion — because on Friday, the developer revealed that multiple sequels are already being planned.
Speaking with AusGamers at the 2008 Tokyo Game Show, DICE senior producer Owen O’Brien said that Mirror’s Edge is actually planned as a trilogy…
The story that we’re telling at the moment is kind of like a trilogy, a three-story arc; but I think the world we’ve created – the city, the culture and the environment – is almost as interesting or more interesting than any one individual story. Faith is kind of defined by her relationship with this city. It’s about how she reacts to the city; how the city’s molded her is what’s interesting.
…but that trilogy may not rely entirely on Faith.
I think there’s a lot of scope to take the story in different directions or maybe tell somebody else’s story, but certainly for these first couple games it’s all about Faith and her experience in the world.
When asked earlier in the conversation if players might be able to build their own parkour-friendly anti-utopian environments with some sort of level editor, O’Brien replied that such an editor would indeed be considered for a sequel, but that it would be “a lot of work.”
“If we do it,” he said, “we want to make the editor as easy to use and intuitive as the game is, and that’s going to take us quite a lot of time.”
Though it may seem a little premature to plan multiple sequels without measuring the sales performance of even the first title (Advent Rising was once a trilogy, too), DICE Marketing director Martin Frain has reportedly projected that Mirror’s Edge will sell over three million copies worldwide.
