According to a recent post at the official Konami Forums (via Kotaku) entitled “MGS4 Limited Edition PS3 Bundle Clarifications,” would-be owners of the $600 bundle aren’t just paying for paint — they’re paying for some new pieces of plastic, too:
Second, some seem to think that the Gun Metal Gray is just a “paint job”, which it is not. It is a different material, which has more of a “matte” finish and feel as opposed to the standard “glossy” one.
Also, the bundle comes with a DualShock3 controller which also is Gun Metal Gray like the console, as opposed to the standard controller, and is of course limited like the bundle is.
Plastic is great and all, but in a game console you’d think silicon might be a priority. Sony can lipstick this 40GB pig as much as they want, but it’s still a pig in the end.
As an investment, we suppose the PS3 is probably still worthwhile. Other than the “matte finish” revelation, the forum post also revealed that there are a good bit less than 10,000 of these PS3s in existence, so they’re probably excellent eBay fodder.
