BusinessWeek is reporting that Sony’s high-definition video format Blu-ray is booming, and thanks mostly to the PlayStation 3.
Citing a recent report by Strategy Analytics which estimates that Blu-ray will sell 19 million players this year alone, BusinessWeek notes that a full 13 million, or 68% of those will be gaming consoles.
Last we checked, the only console that will take a Blu-ray disc, spin it up and actually pull content was Sony’s own PlayStation 3; so unless Aaron Greenberg was totally wrong about Microsoft’s plans for the HD video market, Sony’s money trees may produce some impressive foliage this year.
Strategy Analytics estimates “sales of Sony’s (SNE) Playstation 3 will be the main driver of this growth through at least 2009.”
