GTA4 to Outsell Halo 3?

Wed, Apr 16, 2008

Analysis, News

Variety, citing sources “close to Take-Two Interactive,” is reporting that Grand Theft Auto IV is predicted to sell over 6 million copies in its first week. This would make Rockstar’s newest crimefest a record-holder, outstripping Halo 3, which sold around 5 million copies. Do Americans prefer slaughtering aliens or urban residents?

GTA4’s predicted sales are expected to top $400 million, possibly making it the highest-grossing opening week in both games and movies. Analysts are all agreeing that the game is going to fly off the shelves, but its potential performance has a lot of folks salivating. The prime reason it’s expected to sell better than Halo is the fact that it’s not a system exclusive, and we’re thrilled about the forum flames to come regarding framerates, DLC, and the usual fanboy screeds. Let’s not forget, as well, the hordes of angry parents, politicians, and pundits whose ire will drive sales higher, accomplishing the exact opposite of their goals.

All the while, EA continues to salivate hungrily in the background, their tender offer to shareholders about to expire on Friday. Thursday is the annual stockholders’ meeting for Take-Two, and GameCyte will be tuning in to the live audio webcast, where further sales predictions and decisions regarding EA are sure to come up.
