This is going to become a new trend, isn’t it? I’m sorry, maybe I’m just a traditionalist, but I always thought video games were supposed to provide escapism and allow you to separate yourself from reality for just a little while. Well, Spike TV doesn’t see it that way, because they’re taking applications for “Gears of War 2: First Delta Squad.” Scheduled to air in early October, the new reality show will put contestants through a “real-life televised Gears of War 2 adventure,” in which the ultimate goal is to save humanity from the Locusts. How can we be saved? Why, if one team is the first to complete the entire length of Gears of War 2, of course. Along the way, contestants will face unspecified “real-world challenges that test their skills,” which will include “challenges, tough decisions and sacrifices [that] stand in the path of victory.”
In order to qualify for the show, potential Delta Squad members must send in a photo, fill out a questionnaire, and submit a brief email explaining why they deserve to be on television. The questionnaire is, for the most part, the usual stuff — have you been on TV before, do you play a lot of Gears of War, have you ever been convicted of a felony, etc. However, there’s one section that’s a little bit interesting:
The questionnaire asks, “Have you ever created a website or posted any material on a website (e.g., MySpace)?” and it goes on to say, “If yes, please list all website addresses and explain.” Are they implying that Gears of War fans may have posted to the internet? That is a shameful accusation, sirs, and I demand an apology. If you’re hoping to avoid an embarrassing incident which would revolve around a highly-publicized contestant later turning out to have posted inflammatory material, then I assure you, you have nothing to worry about! Remember, Gears of War is rated Mature. Doesn’t that tell you something about your playerbase, right there? We are as mature, sophisticated, civilized, and eloquent a group of human beings as ever you shall meet. Why, just take a look at this witty exchange from the comments on your very own contest website:
That is gay how u need to be 21 or over
Great i go through the time to load the page and get all excited to see the fact that you have to be 21 and older!
