Force Unleashed Wiimote Lightsabers Deemed ‘Impressive… Most Impressive.’

Joystiq’s Zack Stern may not be a jedi yet; but he did get hands-on time with the Wii version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and came away with some very positive impressions of the Nintendo version’s exclusive lightsaber-dueling multiplayer mode.

Stern wastes no time in heaping praise on the title; in his opening paragraph, he reminisces that the mode “could have shipped as a stand-alone game.” Counting a total of 27 characters and nine arenas in which to swing sabers, Joystiq noted limited environmental interaction (throwable objects, ring-out death in the form of the sarlacc pit!) balanced by a deep combo system:

Each character has a handful of the same basic moves that build together. Flicks of the Wii Remote swing the lightsaber. (And yes, uber-nerds, the game sticks with a single lightsaber even though some of the characters normally have two, or a long, double-ended weapon.) But hold the trigger and rotate your wrist to block with the blade. Force-grab an enemy with a Nunchuk button. But add to that by throwing them with the analog stick. An even more complicated combo would be to grab, strike with lightning, then throw an opponent. With other twists such as a way to plunge the lightsaber straight down after a jump, LucasArts says the game has about 30 different combinations of attacks.

We’ll reserve judgment until we obtain our own impressions, of course; but it seems that the Masters of Teras Kasi will finally be avenged.
