E3 2008: Day Zero Wrap-Up

Tue, Jul 15, 2008

News, Opinion

Technically, the 2008 E3 Media & Business Summit doesn’t even start until today, Tuesday, July 15th. Yet, here we’ve been, all through Monday, braving the sweltering Los Angeles heat to bring you the first wave of news and promises. GameCyte will be here for the duration, checking in on all your favorites, bringing you updates from press conferences yet to come, and reporting on our exciting line-up of hands-on previews we’ve got planned for the week. So, as we set out for the first proper day of E3, here’s a brief update on some of the assorted fun we had on Monday — and what you can look forward to today.

  • We May Not Know Art, But We Know What We Like

Into the PixelMonday evening saw a welcoming reception for E3 attendees, hosted by the AIAS and the Into The Pixel art exhibition. Mingling and cocktails accompanied several walls’ worth of masterpieces created for, and inspired by, some of interactive entertainment’s most creative properties. Honestly, any time you can put up a painting of psychotic bunnies and it counts as art, you’re among a good group of people. Seriously, though, check out this year’s winners. They deserve your praise and respect.

  • Just You Wait

There were a number of games shown off at the Microsoft and EA press events on Monday, which you may have noted were somewhat absent from our coverage thus far. Big titles, too — highly-anticipated blockbusters like Mirror’s Edge, Left 4 Dead, Dead Space, and more. We didn’t skip these out of spite — it’s because we intend to get our hands on them and try them for ourselves, and we thought you’d like to get some more personal, first-hand impressions. Also, though the games certainly looked pretty in the trailers, there weren’t really any announcements that hadn’t been made prior to E3. So, be patient — we’ll have preview coverage of these titles before you know it.

  • Agenda Addenda

Tuesday’s got a big list of big companies and events waiting for you. GameCyte will be attending press presentations from Nintendo, Ubisoft, Sony, and Capcom, and we’ve got personal appointments waiting with Valve, Majesco, Nyko, and more. Not to mention, I think there’s maybe some games on the show floor or something. I heard someone talking about it. We’ll probably look into it on your behalf. Stay tuned!

  • Where Not to Stay at E3

E3 HotelThis is our hotel. Looks nice, doesn’t it? Do not be fooled. This hotel gets a five-star rating in pure fail. Air conditioning in humid, sauna-like room: Missing. Wi-Fi accessible from room: Not so much. Number of sodas remaining in vending machine for heat relief: Zero. Availability of room type reserved, and paid for, in advance: Nil. Shower: Outside room in hallway, for use by entire half of the floor.

How is there no shower in this room? This is a Central American youth hostel masquerading as a hotel. On the plus side, you may rest assured that this means we are spending every available second away from here, on the show floor.
