DSi Continues to Dominate Japanese Market

If you thought the early reception for Nintendo’s DSi was just a flash in the pan … Actually, did anyone think that?

After an amazing first week of sales (including 170k units sold in its first two days of availability in Japan), the DSi continues to lead the way in Nintendo’s homeland according to Famitsu’s latest Japanese sales numbers. From 11/10 – 11/16, the Nintendo DSi sold a whopping 81k units. To put that number into perspective, that’s more than all four major consoles on the Japanese market (360, PS3, Wii, PS2) combined.

Obviously, then, NDS games dominate the software chart, with Kirby Super Star Ultra leading the way at 97k. Other software chart notables include Spike's Way of the Samurai 3 selling 81k copies in its first three days of release, Resistance 2 cracking the top 10, and Wii Music dropping out of the top 15, showing signs that it may end up underachieving in Japan, just as it did in the US. Now I can only hope that Way of the Samurai continues to succeed in Japan, leading to an eventual US release of one of the most underrated PlayStation franchises.
