Ankama Games, known for their popular flash-based Tactical MMORPG Dofus, have announced their first non-PC title, Islands of Wakfu, which is set for an XBLA release.
Wakfu is actually a follow-up to Dofus, but its console brother, Islands of Wakfu, is a spin-off which focuses on single player and two-player cooperative action. Its scope is that of a mere adventure with beat 'em up mechanics, but it should be more than the sum of its parts thanks to the studio's ability to create fantastic hand-drawn worlds and characters with strong personality and charm.
Islands of Wakfu, which is the most recent addition to ANKAMA’s crossmedia universe, retains DOFUS and Wakfu’s graphic touch, but adds the feel of an animated cartoon. This adventure/beat'em all style game can be played by two players in team mode and will reveal never seen before background content from the world of DOFUS and Wakfu.
Islands of Wakfu will be ready by late 2009, while Wakfu should be released sooner than that, and their older brother Dofus is also set for a major overhaul sometime during next year. All in all, the future looks bright for the French developer and its projects.
