God of War III May Be Huge, But It’s No MMO

Update: It has come to our attention that not everyone, even those die-hard God of War fans who typically devote entire forum threads to such topics, originally read or now recall how in early April, a Sony job posting led to rampant speculation that God of War III would be an online game. We therefore apologize to any and all who fail to grasp the sarcasm in our headline above.

This post was supposed to forevermore crush the rumor that God of War III would be an online game, and we find it rather ironic that it is perpetuating that rumor instead.

Original Story: Don't believe any of that hogwash you're hearing today about a new God of War being announced -- Sony revealed God of War III back at E3 in July, and despite providing a second teaser trailer last night at the VGA awards, Sony has given us no new information since then. In fact, it might be entirely accurate to say that the God of War III team has revealed more about Sony than Sony has about the game.

But there is one tidbit of information in today's press release that you might find interesting.

Though Sony bandies about the usual dramatic claims of "jaw-dropping visuals," "epic battles," "stunning graphics," an "elaborate plot," "world-changing scenarios," "fluid, life-like characters" and "unmistakable realism" -- along with a quadrupling of texture resolution and "depth of scope" -- God of War III will still only be big enough for one inflated Spartan ego. I quote (bolding ours):

Set in the realm of Greek mythology, God of War 3 is a single-player game that allows players to take on the climatic role of the ex-Spartan warrior, Kratos, as he treads through the intimidating heights of Mt. Olympus and the dark depths of Hell once more to seek revenge on those who have betrayed him.

God of War III is not an MMO, and it sounds like co-op is off the table too.

Also note: this is NOT the trailer that former GoW designer David Jaffe praised with the words: "It looks like a painting come to life."

I don't even consider MMOS to be games, they're a bloody lifestyle. And the people entrenched in their MMO worlds are completely out of touch with the rest of the gaming world.
Like you sir.
Trying to compare an action game to an MMO.
GOW3 will be the biggest title in '09.

Wait... so you're telling me that a game that has gone through three iterations (including Chains of Olympus) of being a single-player game is going to, yet again, be another single-player game? What news!

Absolutely nobody (except you I guess) was expecting GOW III to be a MMO.

@Hadrien: Sony job postings for a network engineer earlier this year pegged GoW3 as an online title, and soon rumors spread about it perhaps being an MMO, or at least a co-op experience -- as designer Cory Balrog said co-op play was under consideration.

This post is just meant to firmly drive the nail into that coffin.

He didn't want it to be an MMO people, he was making fun of the rumors that were pretty rampant months ago about God of War 3 being online or having co-op.

I never thought that GOW3 would be a MMO! What i did think was a possibility for online co-op. That would be pretty cool but i wouldn't be disappointed if it wasn't in the final game...!
