Age of Conan Goes Gold, Women Lament

What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to officially have a gold master disc after five years of development. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, the decapitation enthusiast's MMORPG from Funcom, has finally gone gold after multiple delays, confirming once again its current launch date of May 20th, 2008.

Quoted in a press release issued this morning, Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas boasted, "Age of Conan has been in development for a long time, as with all MMOs, but we have spent that time well and ended up with a game we are incredibly proud of." Judging by the pre-orders, Funcom should be proud, indeed -- Age of Conan is currently the #9 selling title in North America, and the #1 title for PC. Funcom's release says that pre-orders are among the highest for any MMORPG in history, and the game's official site tracked nearly half a million unique visitors last week.

Loincloths and arterial spray notwithstanding, Age of Conan has been very heavily anticipated over the last few years, with half a million beta sign-ups and plenty of pre-launch awards. My personal enthusiasm for MMORPGs has waned since my time spent with World of Warcraft and City of Heroes, but honestly, any game where ordering the collector's edition gets you free booze for life earns at least partial credit in my book.
