Who would have thought we’d see two games based on movies featuring Sigourney Weaver being released so close to each other? Normally actors would be thrilled that two of their biggest roles are going to be brought back; you know, because they can reprise them. That isn’t the case for Weaver, though, because she’s already turned down voicing Ripley in the new Aliens game, and it looks like she isn’t even on Atari’s wish list for Ghostbusters.
Why did she turn down donning the mantle of Ripley again? Believe it or not, it was because she didn’t agree with the project.
“They wanted me to do Ripley and I said, Well you have Ripley killing aliens but also sick people and other marines! And every other word out of my mouth was a curse word," she told MTV in an interview. "I’m not a nun or anything, but I said, ‘This is not true to the character.’ And they also showed me six video games and said it was going to be made by this company. There was one called ‘Rednecks’ where they shoot animals. The whole thing was so ridiculous.”
Now, it’s possible Weaver just doesn’t know what she’s talking about and lost track of what’s what; as far as I can remember, Sega, Obsidian, and Gearbox have never put out any games revolving around rednecks shooting animals. Or maybe she’s trying to be clever by calling Duke Nukem (which some members of Gearbox worked on) rednecks. I mean, pig cops are sort of animals.
As for Ghostbusters, she just hasn’t been asked. (Or, if she was, she can’t remember.) Not being asked would be a bit surprising, given the entire original cast except for now-retired Rick Moranis is on board. Seems like they’d want the female lead, too.
My only answer? I just don’t think she remembers, or cared enough (at the time) to remember for later. The fact she doesn’t seem to know what she’s talking about in regards to the Aliens game, and that she doesn’t remember whether or not she was asked about the Ghostbusters game, makes me think it’s time for her to take another break from acting to relax.
I’ve found that killing aliens and marines in videogames is a great way to do that.

Perhaps she was thinking of Redneck Rampage there?
