GameSpot is confirming the rumors that have been spreading about the new Mortal Kombat game with a first-look preview, interviewing MK creator Ed Boon from Midway to learn the details about the new title. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is going to feature blood and brutal fighting--but will not be M-rated, which I'm sure we'll all agree is something of a departure for the series.
Prime among gamers' concerns were rumors that the new game would not have fatalities, the hallmark of Mortal Kombat. GameSpot's preview puts this rumor to semi-rest, saying:
According to Boon, there will definitely be fatality-like finishing moves, but they may not be called fatalities. After all, it's doubtful that Superman or Batman would be ripping out anyone's spines or hearts. That said, the team is hellbent on pushing the limits to what they can do with the DC characters, so you can expect to see blood and some level of damage accumulate during a fight.
There's other stuff at work, too; Unreal Engine, mix of characters, fighting while in freefall, blah blah blah. Midway, let me ask you something. You know the game you're making? Look at the title. Look at the first word in the title. I checked no less than five dictionaries, and they all agreed that "mortal," when used in conjunction with "combat," explicitly means to the death. Okay? To the DEATH! What's the deal with--
Oh, my god. I just realized it. That's why you've been spelling it with a "K" all these years! We all thought it was so it would look edgy and cool, but... why, if you've made up your own word, then it can mean anything you want! Ed Boon, you sneaky son of a bitch.
