Today, in their third Friday DLC reveal, Criterion Games announced that Burnout Paradise will be the recipient of nine collectible toy cars. At the official PlayStation.Blog, designer Simon Phipps says that the company believes the above screenshot speaks for itself.
We would take this moment to say that the days of game-changing Burnout Paradise DLC are finally over -- except for two things. First, we have no idea whatsoever what these "toy cars" are and what they do; only that they are "collectables" that will drop in 2009. There's no clarification at Sony's blog, the official website, the Crash TV podcast, or even the Criterion Forums -- except to reassure one user that these are indeed in-game DLC, and not real toys. So for all we know, these could be great fun.
But second, while we were looking for such clarification, we found official confirmation that Burnout Paradise's long-awaited island is still on the way.
While the PlayStation.Blog post contains this exciting, yet vague line...
(And regular readers and fans – we know what DLC we’ve not talked about in a while – be patient with us, it’ll come – it’s just we’ve still got MORE to tell you that you’ve not even heard about.)
...far more concrete confirmation dropped in the official Criterion Forums earlier this week, when Burnout creative director Alex Ward left a succinct message:
The Island will be out next year.
Blaming a three-month turnaround time for testing each new update for potential game meltdown, Ward says that the Island won't arrive until every other one of Criterion's currently planned DLC packs; but that first, most awe-inspiring piece of Burnout Paradise content is on the way.
In other news, Ward also confirmed that while the PlayStation 3 version of the new Back to the Future-inspired Legendary Cars pack will have Trophies for each car, the Xbox 360 version will not have Achievements.
Three Friday Burnout updates down, three to go.
