Tuesday, the Kabushiki business journal owned by Japanese investment consulting firm Morningstar made waves in the gaming community, with news that Konami was considering bringing the PS3-exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 to Xbox 360. Though Konami has historically denied the Xbox 360 rumor, this time things were different: the Kabushiki report had a direct quote from Konami spokesperson Yoshitaka Arai.
Today, My Game News Flash reports that Arai’s quote – and all mentions of Metal Gear Solid 4 – have been struck from the report.
You don’t need to read Japanese to see the difference between the two paragraphs enclosed in boxes below...
…but if you do, you’ll notice fairly quickly that the entire body of text has changed. Kabushiki now quotes a different Konami representative and mentions entirely different game series (Winning Eleven 2009 and Castlevania) to back up their thesis that companies are leaning towards multiplatform release.
The publication denies any breach of journalistic ethics; speaking to J-Cast News, an unnamed Kabushiki representative said that they would rather the release of the new article not be publicly received as a correction or change, but instead a ‘second appearance’ of the same report.
That may be a hard pill for readers to swallow, because the date of the article in question has not changed on major Japanese websites currently running the story.
J-Cast also contacted Microsoft and Konami regarding the Metal Gear Solid 4 rumor itself. While Microsoft Japan had no comment, Konami reps promptly denied any plans for the title on the Xbox 360.
In the United States, Microsoft corporate VP John Schappert today boasted that the Xbox 360 does indeed have the power to run Metal Gear Solid 4, but would not confirm whether or not the game was headed to their platform.
