Back in August, we had the opportunity to learn about Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall, an upcoming MMORPG involving the popular characters and locations from Cartoon Network's original franchises. We learned quite a bit about what the FusionFall team was bringing to the table -- a game with enough licensed IP and original voice acting to entertain both kids and obsessive fans, enough child-safety measures to reassure any parent, and enough clever engineering to fit conveniently in one's browser. Our initial glimpse of FusionFall was certainly a promising one, but while the game certainly seemed to have done its homework in terms of being kid-friendly and true to its properties, the main topic of discussion had barely been touched upon: Would FusionFall be any fun? Was Cartoon Network putting a lot of time and money into creating just another all-ages MMO? To answer this and other questions, the FusionFall team invited us to another roundtable discussion earlier today, and detailed a number of in-depth features which they hope will truly set FusionFall apart from the daily grind.
Chris Waldron, Executive Producer on FusionFall, started off the talk by explaining the ways in which Cartoon Network's MMO will appeal to gamers -- in particular, to action-hungry gamers who might not be interested in a simple click-to-move, click-to-fight mob grinder. Having merely hinted at the game mechanics in our last talk, Waldron took the time to explain the true nature of FusionFall's gameplay, which splits its focus between two genres: The MMO staples of character building, item collection, combat, and advancement, combined with old-school jumping and 3D level traversing, hearkening back to our platforming favorites. Waldron promised we would see a wealth of movement-heavy areas in the game, requiring players to leap, dodge, slide, and execute carefully timed jumps, bringing out the kind of skills and moves from games like Super Mario Bros., or Jak & Daxter, or Ratchet & Clank. In essence, said Waldron, FusionFall takes "what we love about MMORPGs," like world exploration and social interaction, and combines it with the kind of fast-paced action a console gamer might be used to. Console gamers including, for example, kids. FusionFall is promised to feel like an action-oriented console title, but be playable on the PC -- in one's browser, no less.
As such, the player's platforming abilities and movesets will be quite versatile and powerful. Waldron mentioned that many of the associated franchises in FusionFall make use of urban and suburban settings -- areas which lend themselves quite naturally to being climbed upon, and explored from every angle. The word "parkour" came up in describing the total freedom of movement that the FusionFall team is hoping to achieve. Rest assured, Mirror's Edge has nothing to worry about, but, nonetheless, Waldron wants FusionFall players to be able to "go anywhere they can see." If there's a tall mountain or a towering skyscraper, there'll be a way to get on top of it, and FusionFall's level design takes on a very vertical orientation -- not unlike NCsoft's Aion, from the description.
Beyond the desire to do something new with the MMORPG genre, the FusionFall team had quite a few motives in emphasizing platforming gameplay for their title. Waldron referred back to FusionFall's "sitcom" design -- the game's purposefully casual playing duration, which keeps quests short and encourages kids to take breaks for homework and other activities. "We didn't want to build a game where, the more time you spend in it, the better you are," said Waldron, referring to other MMOs' typical system of character abilities. FusionFall, instead, will rely on the player's own skill to complete quests and accomplish goals, requiring reflexes, timing, and other mainstays of gaming. The uncoordinated among us needn't worry, though -- the FusionFall team knows there's plenty of gamers out there who couldn't double-jump their way out of a paper bag. To that end, a broad selection of FusionFall's items, power-ups, and Nanos will also be platforming-oriented. Rather than simply confer new spells or increase your stats, acquiring the right gear will allow you to run faster, jump higher, or even restore to a previous location if you should take a long fall. FusionFall is forgiving in that there will never be any falling-related deaths (falling damage is non-existent), but the team acknowledged that losing the several minutes you just spent scaling a 30-story building will be a frustrating event. That frustration, however, can be staved off once you start discovering which Nanos will help you navigate more quickly and safely.
Just how often would we be taking a frustrating fall, though? FusionFall is an online game, and in online games, there's lag. It's one thing to try and attack an enemy that's not where you think it is, but platforming is a genre where timing and consistency are of vital importance. I began to visualize players leaping onto platforms which weren't really there, and that didn't sound like much fun at all, but the FusionFall team assured me they had taken this into account. As mentioned in our last discussion, the story of FusionFall revolves around an invasion by a large, mucous-y world known as Planet Fusion, which has begun to infect the Earth in a number of critical locations. The missions themselves, we learned today, will send player groups into these "infected zones," which happen to be sectioned off by large, protective energy shields. Though there will be some platforming in the FusionFall world at large, the majority of the platforming gameplay will be kept within the infected zones -- which just happen to be instanced. Player groups will have to enter the zones through transporters, which allows the game to cap the population and deliver a personal, lag-free experience to visitors. Waldron also assured us that FusionFall has been undergoing extensive testing for platforming lag, examining pingtimes and latency under any and all circumstances. He says the problem is very much under control: "I've been playing from Korea, when I'm over there, on our U.S. servers, and I haven't had any trouble at all."
Sam Lewis, Lead Designer for FusionFall, explained how the platforming had been implemented. "Conceptually, from a pre-game design standpoint, we wanted two things," said Lewis. On one hand, the platforming presents an alternative to the typical MMORPG leveling mechanics: "If you don't want to go out and smack monsters over the head all the time, here's another way you can advance your character." The other design element, as mentioned, was creating the infected zones -- utilizing the platforming mechanics to present the MMORPG's traditional "dungeon" function. It makes a certain amount of sense, in retrospect; the traditional platforming game naturally divides itself into point-A-to-point-B "levels," and a self-contained dungeon area in an MMO isn't a very different concept. "Combining these, we've established a really fun activity that's an alternative to the standard 'quest,'" Lewis told us.
Matt Schwartz, a senior writer and content designer on the game, was responsible for coming up with the game's many missions. The platforming level designs presented a unique challenge, he told us: "Think about traditional MMO missions; how can we do those in a platforming area and make it seem completely new and different?" Schwartz described a handful of examples to us, which sounded very reminiscent of recent mission-based platformers like Super Mario Galaxy. The MMO standards are still available -- perhaps an infected zone is full of monsters and the player must defeat a specific number of them. Or, a platforming emphasis might take hold -- maybe a mission objective is in a tricky location, and simply reaching that spot is a challenge by itself. FusionFall will even include boss battles; Schwartz told us that every infected zone will contain a boss lair, and reaching those lairs will typically involve some challenging vertical movement. With some clever controlling and many hours of persistence, FusionFall players will be able to cross every zone, fetch every MacGuffin, and bring all of those skills together to defeat the game's end boss. That's right -- FusionFall has an end boss fight. How's that for adhering to platforming tradition?
This does not mean, however, that FusionFall also has an ending, once that final boss is defeated. For the second half of our discussion, the FusionFall team gave us a description of the game's high-level content, the enticing endgame activities which they hope will keep the game replayable and engaging. To best explain what we were in for, Schwartz took the time to tell us how the game's story and progression is laid out. The Cartoon Network characters provide character interaction from the very beginning, but four such characters are designated as "guides" for the duration of the game -- Ben 10, Dexter, Edd, and (of all people) Mojo Jojo. These guides, interchangeable at will, will provide the bulk of the player's story-based missions, and also distribute character-specific rewards. Dexter, for example, will reward your successes with technology and science-slanted gear, whereas Mojo Jojo will give you... well, "villain-themed stuff."
In any case, a player's guide(s) will direct him through the entirety of the main story arc, all the way through the end boss and up to FusionFall's level cap, which is reached at level 36. The FusionFall team estimates this process will provide no less than 100-120 hours of gameplay, though they expect that number to be far higher for leisurely, exploration-heavy playthroughs -- the average player, they told us, can expect to spend roughly 200-250 hours going through the basic story.
Once the main story is completed, players will find themselves exploring the outer reaches of FusionFall's game world. Though the game starts out in the (sort of) normal suburban environments of Cartoon Network's familiar franchises, as players rise in level, they will soon venture outside the cul-de-sacs and treehouses, finding infected zones in more exotic locations -- jungles, deserts, uncharted wilderness, and beyond. Finally, in the high-level content, players will reach the "Dark Lands," portions of the world where Planet Fusion holds a greater influence than Earth's native habitats. The populace is more alien, the art and sound direction takes on a darker and more sinister tone, and it's here that the platforming gets really tricky -- and the loot is far more rare.
Though FusionFall's endgame content will certainly contain a few of the MMO staples -- collecting super-rare items, exploring the high-level-only areas, restarting the game with a new guide for a different story arc -- there are a few elements that the team have specifically tried to avoid. Massive raids are a definite omission: "Don't expect big mega-raids with hours of time commitment," said the FusionFall team. Referring again to the game's "sitcom" design, the creators of FusionFall feel that large-scale raids are not appropriate for their target demographic. Excelling at the endgame content will also not involve grinding. "Grinding occurs because you're not making any interesting choices," said the team, "You can definitely grind killing monsters, but you can't really grind an infected zone."
Instead, the infected zones will be kept replayable through the addition of time trials. Lewis compared FusionFall's time trials to the races seen in the 3D generation of Super Mario titles, requiring players to dash through an infected zone while collecting designated items. These objectives, combined with the inclusion of leaderboards, will present one's fellow players as endgame foes -- FusionFall players will be able to compete for the top spot in a given day, week, or month, shifting their focus to social competition rather than PvE. In addition, naturally, FusionFall will be given expansions and updates like any good MMO, providing players with fresh content indefinitely (though the frequency of updates has yet to be determined).
Everything we've heard about FusionFall so far makes the game sound like a truly unique offering, great for Cartoon Network fans and gamers of all kinds. Of course, the acid test will come once the game becomes playable, but we'll have a chance to find out firsthand when the game goes into beta testing later this year. We'll keep our fingers crossed, and we'll keep you posted on our hands-on impressions, as soon as we get them.
Update: FusionFall will release January 14th, 2009, and open betas are ongoing at the game's official website.
