Diablo III Drops Sorceress, Welcomes Wizard

News

Today, Blizzard has revealed the third of five character classes available in Diablo III. Joining the ranks of Barbarian and Witch Hunter is the Wizard, a powerful young spellcaster with Asian features.

Including destruction, ice and lightning spells among her many powers, the class is obviously a new take on the Sorceress; and Blizzard goes so far as to poke fun at this in their character introduction flavor text.

That is correct: I used the uncouth term wizard, not sorcerer. It seems that even the title of a civilized magic wielder is too restrictive for this young upstart.

It also doesn't hurt that the term Wizard is gender-neutral.

About a month ago, lead designer Jay Wilson told Videogamer.com that their next character class announcement would make even more fans hate them; but as a former Sorc player myself I'm not seeing any reasons to worry. As far as I can tell, I'll still be able to zap foes from a distance, freeze them stiff and then teleport away with their goodies... and adding explosive purple projectiles, a sphere of bullet time, ghost clones and a frakking disintegration death ray to that basic arsenal won't hurt one bit.

Now, here's hoping for the return of Frozen Orb.
