"James," a GameCyte reader, bought a copy of "Far Cry 2" PC the very same week it came out -- and has been wrangling with Ubisoft customer support to get that game to work ever since.
But though the details of his struggle are interesting, that's not why he forwarded his entire tech support transcript to us today. He did so because Ubisoft is now suggesting that he perform the very same "Jackal's Curse" fix we recommended ten days ago.

Please try the following and let me know if it works:1. Uninstall Far Cry 2 from your PC. Tell the application NOT to keep your save games or configuration files (this is important).
2. Reinstall the game, allow Punkbuster to install, launch the game, allow it to autoupdate to version 1.02, quit out, and restart your computer.
3. Launch the game, go to the Options menu, go to Sound, and turn off Music. Click "Apply."
4. Go back to the Main Menu, choose Story Mode, choose New Story, choose Normal, pick a character and begin your new game.
5. Should you get past the third loading screen, hit Esc, go to Options, then Sound, and turn your music back on.
Please let me know if this resolves your problem or not.
The resemblance is uncanny.
But just to be clear, the purpose of this post isn't to highlight that Ubisoft stole my idea. To the contrary, I'm glad they lifted it. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if even one reader is able to play their copy, the time I spent retroactively testing this game for Ubisoft was worthwhile, and I appreciate the fact that customer support highlights community fixes in this manner.
What doesn't jive with me is how customer support treated "James"'s issue over the two months prior, which you can see below... how Ubisoft assumes issues are fixed if they don't get a reply from a customer within 48 hours... and how despite everything, "James" tells me he still hasn't been able to see past the third loading screen of "Far Cry 2."

Well, have installed the patch from the game downloader but it does not solve my problem with the third loading screen (the jackals curse) I am not impressed by the level or lack of support here, I am told the developers are aware of this issue well its about time they fixed it, I have wasted my hard earned cash for a product that I have not been able to play since release and frankly I find this a disgrace.Response (Jason) - 12/17/2008 02:50 PM
James,First, thank you for your patience with this issue. The Far Cry 2 1.2 patch was released today. Please start the game and allow the autopatcher to update the game. Alternately, you can manually download and install the patch from our website at http://support.ubi.com in the game patches section. Please note that if you have any previous save games, they may not work correctly with the new patch so you will need to create a new profile and start over or reinstall the game. After starting the game, please let me know if you experience any additional problems.

James,As indicated previously, this is a known issue that the developers are currently working on. As soon as any additional information becomes available, it will be placed on our website and in the game's forums. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

I dont seem to have this installed nor am I aware of any program to give DX10 functionality within XP, I dont have Halo2 or ShadowrunStill unable to play
Response (Jason) - 11/04/2008 02:44 PM
Lee,The developers of the game are currently researching this problem, but would like to know if you have installed Alky, or any similar software that allows DX10 functionality on Windows XP systems, or if you have installed Halo 2 or Shadowrun. If you have installed Alky, please uninstall that program and try the game again. We appreaciate your continued patience while we research this issue.
