Sega Unveils Hilarious Trailer — Oh, and House of the Dead: Overkill for Nintendo Wii

Just yesterday, Jesse and I were discussing how even though there are a host of light gun peripherals available for the Nintendo Wii, they seem to be a questionable investment when there are so few good shooters for the system. Well, question your investment no more, because today Sega unveiled a brand-new House of the Dead, exclusive to Wii, that looks and sounds like an absolute blast.

Drawing on the finest traditions of gorefest B-movie classics, The House of the Dead: Overkill promises over-the-top action, motion-controlled melee combat and “an utterly in-your-face zombie-dismembering blast.” Seriously, that’s on the fact sheet.

But don’t take our word for it — watch this awesome trailer and see what’s in store with your own eyes:

Though traditionally developed by Sega Wow, House of the Dead series reins have been handed over at least temporarily to Headstrong Games, formerly known only for their family-friendly strategy title Battalion Wars. But if you still have any doubts over whether Headstrong can deliver a M-rated hardcore title after viewing their company postcard, just take a gander at this IGN interview with producer Neil McEwan.

After hinting at some sort of dual-wielding, anticipating controversy over the game’s mature content and lovingly describing the likelihood of a single environmental destructible setting the entire stage on fire, McEwan ends on this gem:

“[Overkill] will beat the shit out of grooming a horse.”

The House of the Dead: Overkill is slated for early 2009, and we can’t wait to see if as much of Headstrong’s bloody humor comes to bear on the actual game as it did these excellent promotional materials.

We leave you with this official fact sheet for your reading pleasure:

THEY’VE COME FOR BRAINS, YOU’LL GIVE THEM BULLETS!

The House of the Dead: OVERKILL™ charges you with mowing down waves of infected, blood-thirsty zombies in a last-ditch effort to survive Bayou City and uncover the horrific truth behind the origins of the House of the Dead.

Survival horror as it’s never been seen before! A pulp-style take on the classic SEGA light-gun shooter series. Back when the famous Agent G was still fresh out of the academy, he teamed up with hard-boiled bad-ass Agent Washington to investigate stories of mysterious disappearances in small-town Louisiana. Little did they know what blood-soaked mutant horror would await them in the streets and swamps of Bayou City.
