According to VGChartz [via Kotaku], Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness earned a stunning $330,000 during its opening three days on XBLA. This result is noteworthy given that the game debuted at a price point of $20, well above the $5 and $10 price points most XBLA players are accustomed to, and yet it still became the highest-grossing premiere on the platform. It is also worth pointing out that the game came in at a whopping 165 MB, over the previous size limit for XBLA games. Ben Schlicter offered this insight into what this development might mean for the XBLA platform:
So what does this mean for XBLA? Bigger, more “Full Game” type fare, or just higher prices for the same kind of content? PAA brought a lot to the table for a game 15MB over the 150MB limit. What will happen if a developer takes advantage of the new 350mb limit, in a real and meaningful way? What will be the next game to debut at $15 or $20?
While it may bode well for the platform, I think this success is more about the potency of the Penny-Arcade brand. I love Jerry and Mike (or Tycho and Gabe), so I’d like to congratulate them on this great debut. I guess it’s time for me to contribute my $20 to the boys in Washington and get my copy of the game. I can’t wait for the first video of Jerry and Mike burning $100 bills.
