Capcom Confirms Street Fighter IV Headed to Consoles AND PC

Tue, May 27, 2008

News

Yesterday, JeuxVideo (via BigDownload) claimed to have discovered a leaked Capcom document that indicated (unsurprisingly) that Street Fighter IV would find release on Xbox 360 and PS3, but also (quite surprisingly) that the hotly anticipated fighter would make its way to the PC. But the rumors didn’t last long. Today, Capcom confirmed them all in one fell swoop.

Fifteen minutes ago, the following message hit our inbox:

Hi guys,

Big news from Capcom today! We’ve announced the console versions of Street Fighter IV. The next generation Street Fighter game finally finds a home on Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3 system and Windows-based PC. Now you can join in on the non-stop breathtaking fighting game with all your favorite Street Fighter characters. Street Fighter IV brings a brand new fighting game to fans the world over. With the inclusion of Capcom’s latest advancements in new generation technology, Street Fighter IV promises to deliver an extraordinary experience that will re-introduce the world to the time-honored art of virtual martial arts.

We are also proud to announce the ship of Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions COLONIES EDITION has shipped to retailers. Lost Planet: Extreme Condition COLONIES EDITION is one of the first games to allow cross platform connectivity from Xbox LIVE® to Games for Windows – LIVE, allowing console and PC users to battle it out on the same online battlefield. In addition to the new cross-playability, COLONIES EDITION also brings a host of new multiplayer modes, weapons, characters, and you can even play as the Akrid!

Cheers,

Tim and the Capcom PR team

Thank you Tim. Thank you.

We’ll have to admit that Capcom doesn’t have the best record with PC games — “half-assed” is the operative word when describing their ports of Lost Planet, Devil May Cry 3 and Resident Evil 4but seeing as how they’re currently trying to set things straight with Lost Planet COLONIES EDITION, and considering that all three versions of Street Fighter are being ported from the arcade version at the same time — we’re willing to give Capcom another chance, and hopeful that PC gamers will finally have a fighter to call their own.

It does help that the Taito Type X2, the arcade board the game is being developed on, is based on PC hardware and runs Windows XP Embedded (See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taito_Type_X2).

Still, awesome news. Won’t have to worry about Microsoft-hating friends getting a PS3 version while I get a 360 version.

SF IV on the PC. Awesome. Purely awesome. I hope it isn’t a DirectX 10 only port… I have no desire to run Vista.
