A Chat with the Chaps: SBCG4AP Q&A

Posted on 08 May 2008 by Jesse Henning

Telltale Games announced last month that they had paired up with Homestarrunner.com to develop Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People. Based on the characters from the Homestar Runner cartoons, SBCG4AP features connoisseur of awesome and all-around wrestleman Strong Bad in his first commercial game release. We had the opportunity to ask a few questions of Matt and Mike Chapman, creators of homestarrunner.com, about episodic gaming and bringing Strong Bad to WiiWare.

GameCyte: How did this project get underway? Did you approach Telltale, or did they approach you?

Strong BadMatt & Mike: Telltale actually approached us which was really cool. We just got an email from them one day saying they’d be interested in talking about projects together. We already had a Season One pass to Sam & Max so we were pretty psyched.

GC: How accessible will the game be to new gamers? Will players who aren’t familiar with Homestar Runner be able to follow the characters and the story?

M&M: Hopefully it’ll be accessible to everybody but we’re also not spelling everything out for the uninitiated. The first episode serves as a nice primer, it kinda feels like an old-school Homestar cartoon, so that should help set up the characters and their relationships for the unfamiliar. That being said, there’s plenty of stuff only Homestar fans will get, which we think is good.

GC: Do you have any plans to tie the game in to the homestarrunner.com website? Will players be able to extend the game experience through web content?

sb-and-cheat.jpgM&M: Aside from promoting the game on our site, we’ll probably let it stand alone. In a way, just going to our site expands the experience for people that aren’t already familiar with it. But we kinda see the episodes of the game as Homestar cartoons anyway, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we referred to events from the game in future cartoons the way we do with any of the content on our site.

GC: How long has SBCG4AP been in development?

M&M: Things really got cooking this past January.

GC: Any significant differences between the Wii and PC versions? Will there be use of any future-y waggle controls?

M&M: There will probably be some waggling in the Wii version but in small doses and only where appropriate.

GC: What can you tell us about the overarching story? What will tie the episodes together?

M&M: It’s basically like five different cartoons from our website that you get to play. So they’ll be connected the way any of our cartoons are connected: by the characters and the stuff they do. We’re not big on overarching stories in the first place.

GC: What sort of Videlectrix mini-games can we expect to see?

VidelectrixM&M: Big blocky, pixely ones. They’ll fit right in with Videlectrix’s cutting-edge catalog.

GC: Is Senor Cardgage in this thing? He’d better be.

M&M: I camb’t say, Peralgebra. You’ll half to wade and ski.

We would like to thank the Chapmans (Chapmen?) for taking the time to answer our questions. SBCG4AP is scheduled to release through WiiWare in June.
