GTA IV Continues to Crush Records in U.K.

It should come as no surprise to you that Grand Theft Auto IV is breaking a record or two when it comes to sales. You probably still have GTA IV running in the background even as you read this. It turns out that GTA has virtually wiped away all those pesky records in the U.K. and scribbled in its own name. Originally projected to sell 609k units in the first 24 hours by ChartTrack, GTA actually managed to move 631k copies and 926k across both platforms during the first week.

But that’s not all. GTA also clocked in with overwhelming revenues. Although Take-Two hasn’t been vocal about the successes yet, that hasn’t stopped ChartTrack from announcing various encouraging figures:

ChartTrack pegs first-week revenues for GTAIV in the region at £39.9 million (about $78.7 million), saying the game amounted to 61.2 percent of all sales. The game outpaced sales of previous No. 1 Wii Fit by a ratio of 9-to-1, with ChartTrack saying Nintendo’s fitness simulator had dropped off 58 percent due to supply constraints. The industry trackers also noted that GTAIV outsold every 2007 UK release after only one week, save for Brain Training on the Nintendo DS and multiplatform titles FIFA 08 and Call of Duty 4.

In a sign that GTA’s success isn’t limited to those fey islands across the pond (ha!), the most recent chart of the top Xbox 360 titles on live was released and look who is sitting pretty at #1:

Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (based on UU’s)
1 GTA IV
2 Call of Duty 4
3 Halo 3
4 Guitar Hero III
5 Gears of War
6 Rock Band
7 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six® Vegas 2
8 Iron Man Demo
9 FIFA 08
10 Forza Motorsport 2

So play on, you fair gamers, enjoy your wanderings through the wonderful world of Liberty City. Rockstar thanks you. Take-Two thanks you. And EA will probably be thanking you soon enough, too.
