It’s certainly no secret that I have a soft spot in my heart (or the gaping maw of death where my heart used to reside) for adventure games, particularly those adventure games made by LucasArts. So, waking up to the brilliant news that ScummVM has been released for the Wii with Wiimote compatibility is like emerging from the sweat-stained throes of DTs on a sunny morning. Maybe the ability to play Monkey Island on the big screen will help mend my tortured soul. Further explanation of this wondrous development and a video of ScummVM in action is available after the break.
A brief bit of background for those that don’t already know the wonders of SCUMM. It was a scripting language that served as a hybrid game engine for LucasArts adventure games back in the glory days, and its ubiquity among those games has made it easy for adventure game enthusiasts to support emulation. Thus, ScummVM has been ported to pretty much every platform possible. Even BeOS. I forgot that operating system ever existed. The rather clever part of the system is that you don’t need any specific ROM files to play your old adventure game favorites. You simply need the original files.
And now, the intrepid home brew programmers for the Wii have come out with a version of ScummVM for the Wii that you can download here.
