Wii Fit to Be Web-Enabled?

Britain’s The Sunday Times conducted an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto, designer of all things Mario and, most recently, Wii Fit. The newspaper asked him a number of things about the new workout game’s ability to bring families together through the power of fitness, joining Wii Fit to your existing workout routines, and other tidbits, but the interesting rumor appears in the final paragraph.

Miyamoto is so convinced we will be willing slaves to the Wii work-out that he is already moving on to the next stage: web-enabled Wii Fit. Balance boards will be hooked up to the internet to enable users to compete live against anyone, anywhere. If Miyamoto has his way, we’ll all be doing press-ups at dawn and comparing ourselves with millions of others.

Friend codes aside, would this work? Would we rank ourselves on national and international Wii Fit leaderboards, comparing our BMI to that of our friends and contemporaries? Would the people at the top be accused of hacking the game through clever use of bulimia? Would we start seeing Wii Fit clans and tournament ladders? Look for me, I’ll be [–KaRDi0–]PhatBurnz0rz227.
