Rumor

While GameCyte currently has no (legal) way to confirm this, there’s a report over at the 1Emulation forums that, having figured out how to decrypt the outer wrapper, the homebrew community has discovered that the Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console games are simply run-of-the-mill ROMs, easily playable on PC emulators, and their documentation is a collection of HTML files.

Given the way the story has spread on Digg, official action by Nintendo is probably forthcoming. We just hope it’s not directed at the entrepreneuring folks at 1Emu who may have just incriminated themselves:

one of our staff members took the liberty in seeing what one these decrypted virtual console games (and which he owned) had inside them. Upon further inspection, he found that the game held a ROM file, that can even be played on emulators! Not only that, but the documentation of the game that you can read on the Nintendo Wii is simply a bundle of HTML files. The virtual console games come with the emulator as well, and the emulator application is one of the files in the game WAD.

GameCyte does not condone piracy, but we admit we’re very curious to hear of any ways such a technique could be used to legally modify the Wii for enhanced functionality. Share your thoughts in the comment section below.
