Final Fantasy IV, Trauma Center 2 Headed to Nintendo DS — Chrono Trigger To Follow?

News, Rumor

DS Fanboy has been flipping through the pages of the latest Nintendo Power, and discovered mounds of portable goodness therein. Top billing, of course, goes to the magazine’s 10-page cover story on the Final Fantasy IV remake for DS.

According to Fanboy, there’s no US release date for the remake, but since the Japanese release was last December and the screenshots are in English, the chances we won’t see it cross the Pacific are fairly slim. More interestingly though is the quote Nintendo Power coaxed from the mouth of FFIV remake director Takashi Tokita:

Chrono Trigger was a no-holds-barred, swashbuckling adventure that was a lot of fun to work on… If the demand is great enough, it’s certainly possible. But as a creator, I feel the need to create new titles and not just series installments and remakes. I realize it’s a little strange for me to be saying that in an interview about Final Fantasy IV (laughs). But I need to remind myself of that, too.”

The sheer amount of glee I feel writing the simple phrase “Chrono Trigger remade for the DS” makes me nearly weep with a mix of nostalgia and anticipation, and I’ve only beaten that game three times.

Final Fantasy IV import previews and impressions can, of course, be found around the web to peruse at your leisure.

The issue also features new details on Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2, a full-fledged sequel to the original DS title, and due Summer 2008. DS Fanboy reports:

Almost three years since Under the Knife captured the hearts of wannabe surgeons on the DS, Trauma Center is finally coming back to the handheld after a remake and an indirect sequel on the Wii. Dr. Stiles stars in the game, once again, and is joined by Nurse Angie Thompson as they deal with the effects and “unanswered mysteries” left by the defeated GUILT Virus.

Dr. Stiles’ surgical instruments will reportedly have improved functionality, and the game will feature a new mode so that those of us without the manual dexterity of a real surgeon can nevertheless enjoy the game this time round.
